The One Person They Refused to Replace

With the first core members of the crew now on board, the next step was inevitable: the vision had to become an actual shoot.

Back in Vienna, Dean and Old Salt sat down with the first moodboard for AYE MATIES. Until that moment, much of the project had existed in conversations, music, location photographs and fragments of an adventure world slowly beginning to take shape.

Now they needed to turn that world into scenes.

They began working on the first shot list.

How should Old Salt first appear on screen?What should the audience see before they understood who he was?Which images would establish the mystery, the sea, the adventure and the strange collision between an old pirate soul and the modern world?

Slowly, individual moments began to emerge.

The shore.The arrival.The first steps into the present.The details of clothing, hair, skin, dirt and exhaustion that would make the character believable.

And while studying the moodboard and discussing the first planned shots, one thing became clear very quickly:

They needed makeup and special effects support.

Bringing Old Salt to Life

Old Salt could not simply appear in front of the camera wearing a costume.

For the story to work, he had to feel authentic. Weathered by the sea. Marked by the journey. Like a man who had survived storms, loss and perhaps even time itself before finding himself washed ashore in a world he no longer recognised.

That required more than wardrobe.

It required someone who understood character transformation. Someone able to work with ageing, skin, hair, dirt, wounds and all the subtle visual details that allow an audience to believe in a character before he has even spoken a single word.

Dean immediately thought of one person:

Natascha.

He had met her years earlier during the production of “Wienerland.” He remembered her talent, her precision and her instinct for transforming an actor into someone who truly belonged inside a story.

For AYE MATIES, she seemed perfect.

Dean told Old Salt about her work and about the level of detail she could bring to the Captain’s first appearance on screen.

Old Salt did not need much convincing.

There was only one problem.

The Wrong Date for the Right Person

When they contacted Natascha, it quickly became clear that the world of AYE MATIES genuinely appealed to her. Sailing, pirates and adventure were subjects she found exciting from the very beginning.

But during the planned shooting period, she was already committed to another film production.

She could not join them.

For Dean and Old Salt, it was a serious disappointment.

The locations had already been selected.The first crew members had come on board.The moodboard was becoming a shot list.The first shoot was beginning to feel real.

And now, the person Dean believed was ideal for one of the most important visual aspects of the trailer was unavailable.

At first, they did what any production would do.

They began searching for an alternative.

Searching for a Replacement

They posted a social media call in Austria.They sent emails.They made phone calls.They spoke to possible candidates and searched for someone who could take responsibility for makeup and special effects on the first shoot.

There were conversations.There were suggestions.There were people willing to help.

But the more Dean searched, the clearer his feeling became:

No one was Natascha.

For a project so strongly centred around the presence and mystery of Old Salt, compromising on his very first appearance did not feel right. The Captain’s arrival on screen would define the visual world of AYE MATIES from its first moments.

It had to be convincing. xxlaslaIt had to be detailed. It had to feel real.

Eventually, Dean could no longer hide his frustration.

“Damn it,” he said. “She is the best. I want her on this project.”

Old Salt remained quiet for a moment.

He considered the planned dates. The selected locations. The work that had already gone into organising the first shoot. Changing course would not be the most convenient option.

But this journey had never been about convenience.

Then Old Salt gave his answer:

“Then we move the shooting date.”

No lengthy debate. No second-best solution. No compromise.

If Natascha was the right person for AYE MATIES, then the production would wait until she could come on board.

A Change of Course

And so the plan changed.

The first shooting date was postponed, making it possible for Natascha to become part of the production.

It was a small decision with a large meaning. Even before the first scene had been filmed, the team had established one of the principles that would guide AYE MATIES:

The right people mattered more than the easiest schedule.

This was not going to be a project assembled through compromises just to get something done quickly. It was going to be built around creative people who believed in the world they were creating – and who could bring that world to life with the authenticity it deserved.

The next step was obvious.

Natascha had to meet Old Salt.

The First Meeting at Vienna’s Naschmarkt

Their first meeting took place at Vienna’s Naschmarkt, outside at a café on one of the first truly hot days of the year.

Vienna had suddenly changed seasons. The terraces were filled with people, sunlight reflected from glasses and café tables, and the air carried that unmistakable feeling of early summer arriving all at once.

It was the perfect day for another member of the crew to enter the story.

Old Salt arrived in style.

Not by sailing ship this time.

He came on his Harley-Davidson Road King.

Perhaps it was not an eighteenth-century vessel, but it suited the Captain perfectly: powerful, unmistakable and impossible to ignore.

There, in the sunshine of the Naschmarkt, Dean began telling Natascha the full story of AYE MATIES.

About the mysterious Captain.About the music.About the chosen locations by the Adriatic.About the first planned scenes.About a man from another world who would come ashore and step into the present day.

And above all, about the transformation needed to make that moment believable on screen.

The team had not found a replacement for Natascha.

Instead, they had changed course in order to bring the right person on board.

The first shoot would take place later than originally planned.

But now, it would have the artist Dean had wanted from the very beginning.

The moodboard had become a shot list.The shot list had revealed what the production needed.And one changed date had brought the next essential crew member into the world of AYE MATIES.

Because some journeys are worth delaying for the right companion.

And some characters deserve nothing less than the best person to bring them to life.
